Please give me some ideas... (hackathon problem statement)

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around seeking ideas for a problem statement to be used in an upcoming open domain hackathon. Participants share their experiences and ask questions to clarify the requirements and expectations for the hackathon, which is open to various project ideas.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses urgency in finding a problem statement due to a tight deadline and previous unsuccessful experience in a hackathon.
  • Several participants ask for clarification on the hackathon's rules, structure, and the nature of the problem statements required.
  • Another participant suggests that the previous project may not have been selected due to its perceived lack of complexity and social impact, despite having a working backend.
  • There are suggestions for potential project ideas, such as creating a tool to filter educational content on social media or developing a simple game.
  • A participant notes that incomplete projects tend to have lower chances of winning in hackathons, emphasizing the importance of delivering a finished product.
  • One participant offers assistance with coding a non-cell phone user interface in C++ using various frameworks.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of a well-defined problem statement and the need for a complete project. However, there is no consensus on what constitutes a suitable problem statement or project idea, and multiple competing views on the criteria for success in hackathons remain.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty regarding the specific requirements for the hackathon, including the nature of the problem statements and the judging criteria. There are also limitations in understanding the hackathon's theme and the resources available.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in hackathons, particularly those seeking guidance on formulating problem statements and project ideas, may find this discussion beneficial.

i am going to participate in a hackathon and its open domain so i need to come up with a problem statement and i dont know what problem statement to choose and i dont have enough time to research it and last time participating in a hackathon i failed due to not choosing a correct problem statement and i dont want that to happen again. so you guys face any problem that requires a software solution and like do you guys have any idea but postponding it due to time constrain, please lend me your idea and like the hackathon ppt submission timimg is going to be completed by tomorrow so guys be fast and if you are seeing this thread later please dont hesitate to share your problem or idea because it might be helpful for me in the future

Can you give us a link to the hackathon rules or some other thing that says what the problem statement should contain?

Okay so a couple of questions:

1. "Open domain hackathon" refers to what, exactly? A hackathon without a set theme?

2. What was wrong with your previous question (what was it, and what did the judges not like about it)?

3. How is the judging done (just judged by set people or voted on) and what ages are the hackathon aimed at?

4. Is there a website for this hackathon? If you sent it over I could take a look at the details (e.g. how long the hackathon is, what resources you have, team sizes etc) which could help us find a good problem.

5. What programming languages/tools are you good at? This is a big factor in wanting to make good hackathon projects!

1. yeah i think so

2.i participated in sih all india ahckathon to go to national level we need to clear the internal college round. our team cleared ppt round and the for a problem we proposed a correct solution and during hackathon my friend did he backend and i need to build a app frontend but i failed but we build a working backend whatever feature we promised on ppt we made it except making it a mobile app we made it as a website but still it was working but they didnt select our project. i gave up on frontend becayse the judge came to us and said forget frontend focus on backend so i left it but they didnt select us. when i asked the seniors they said it doesent sound really big and complicate and dosent have social impact and does not generate revenue but as the problem statement described we proposed a solution and did it but still they didnt select my project https://www.sih.gov.in/sih2025PS link for the website and the problem statement number is 25016. still dont know the real and proper reason but i feel likeit was because of the problem statement

3.i think its is done by set of people .no info related is mentioned

4.https://pechacks.org/

5. idk like if you give us any problem statement we are capable of doing at. us guys are still at learning stage but i feel like we guys can take up any problem statement and propose a solution

Hmm the link to the problem statement you had before isn't working. Could you give me an example of the sort of thing that they want? Generally in hackathons like the link you provided you think of a project idea rather than a problem statement.

For example, one might make a tool that automatically filters out content on your YouTube feed that isn't strictly educational or beneficial - or even allow the user to specify a topic and only allow content that is according to that topic, helping manage getting "sucked into the social media vortex". That's a good project for a 36-hour hackathon. Or maybe you go hardware - though generally it's harder to win with them (they are fun though!)

If the hackathon isn't specifically for making things that "matter" or "make a difference" (it doesn't specify on the site, but I also don't run this type of hackathon) - then maybe you could do something simple like make a fun game.

Honestly I think that your project last time likely didn't win not because of the actual project idea itself but the fact that it's incomplete - that you didn't have the time to make a proper fronted and rather focused on a backend that can do everything. Generally having an unfinished project severely pushes back your chances of winning: I have never run a hackathon where the winners have had an unfinished project. Even finished but much simpler projects tend to be more in favour.

Also finally if you're going to a hackathon to win... then like... meh. The people who win tend to be the people who just rock up with a bunch of friends and are just there to have fun :)

If you need someone to code a non-cell phone user interface in C++ let me know.

wxWidgets, QT or plain Windows.
