Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the decision of whether electrical engineering majors should take the FE/EIT (Fundamentals of Engineering / Engineer in Training) exam before graduating. Participants share their experiences and opinions regarding the necessity and timing of the exam in relation to career prospects and further education.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Personal experience sharing

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the necessity of the FE/EIT exam for electrical engineering majors, suggesting it may be more relevant for mechanical and civil engineering fields.
  • Another participant advises taking the exam before graduation to avoid difficulties later, sharing a personal regret about delaying it.
  • A different participant, who recently graduated, expresses satisfaction with passing the FE exam and notes that it positively impacted their job prospects.
  • One participant mentions that at their university, passing the FE exam is a prerequisite for pursuing a master's degree in electrical engineering.
  • There is a suggestion that having the EIT or PE credentials can provide a competitive edge in the job market, even if not strictly required for most EE jobs.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the importance of the FE/EIT exam for electrical engineering majors, with some advocating for taking it early while others question its necessity. The discussion remains unresolved regarding a consensus on its relevance.

Contextual Notes

Some participants' views are influenced by personal experiences and institutional requirements, which may not apply universally. The discussion does not resolve the varying opinions on the exam's necessity for electrical engineering careers.

Hi, this is my first post. I did a quick search and didn't see anything relevant. I finish my B.S.E.E. in August. Would it be wise for me to take the FE/EIT (Fundamentals of Engineering / Engineer in Training) exam before then? I have received some conflicting answers to this question. It seems like the F.E. is more necessary for mechanical and civil engineering and not as pertinent to electrical majors? But do I need to take this exam before taking the PE exam?

Thanks in advance

I'm in NC if that makes any difference.

Take it before you graduate, get it out of the way. I just passed mine in my first year of graduate school and I regret not doing it earlier, it was a royal pain. Yeah, most EE jobs don't require it, but having EIT or PE gives you an edge over everyone else.

At my university, the FE is a pre-requisite to the M.S. degree.

Hi,
Like you, I graduated with a BS.c. in Electrical Engineering a few days ago, took the FE exam in April thinking passing it would boost my resume. I passed it and I am ever so glad I did, my perspective employer seems ever so impressed. I might want to start a consulting firm someday, getting a PE is rather important for that and passing the EIT is a stepping stone to getting there.

Good luck in whatever decision you take.
