Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around a formula related to simple harmonic motion (SHM), specifically examining the expression \( a = - \omega x^{2} \) and its validity in the context of equations of motion.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Mathematical reasoning

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants explore the relationship of the formula to SHM, with one questioning the correct form of the equation. Others discuss the equations of motion and seek to clarify the definition of \(\omega\) while attempting to derive the formula from established principles.

Discussion Status

The discussion is active, with participants engaging in clarifying the formula's context and exploring the derivation from equations of motion. There is no explicit consensus yet, but several lines of reasoning are being examined.

Contextual Notes

Participants are working under the constraints of deriving the formula from known equations of motion and clarifying definitions, indicating a focus on foundational concepts in SHM.

I have this formula in my book:
[tex]\[ a = - \omega x^{2} \][/tex]
Can anyone help me show how to show that this formula is true?

What does that formula relate to?

If it is supposed to relate to SHM then the equation is supposed to be [itex]a=- \omega^2 x[/itex]

yes sorry, that was what i meant. Do you know how to show the formula from the equations of motion?

The equation of motion is:

[tex] m a = - k x[/tex]

What is the definition of [itex]\omega[/itex]? Then solve the equation of motion for a.
