AI Thread Summary
A user reports experiencing a "shaking phenomenon" in their foam-filled futon mattress, feeling localized movement within the foam that disrupts sleep. They have checked the bed frame for stability and contacted the mattress producer without receiving a clear explanation. The user suspects there may be embedded technology causing this sensation and plans to cut open the foam block for investigation. Suggestions from others include considering the possibility of animals inside the mattress and consulting the manufacturer for further insights. The discussion highlights the unusual nature of the issue and the user's desire for understanding before taking further action.

TL;DR Summary
What could cause the foam filling inside a mattress to move such that the mattress when layed upon feels as if there is something moving inside the mattress. The sensation feels as if the foam inside the mattress is wobbling and moving up and down.
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my post.

I have had an issue of late with a futon I purchased. The filling is a foam filling. On several occasions, when sleeping on the futon, there was a feeling of the foam block moving inside the mattress such that it was pressing against me and disturbed my sleep. The sensation felt as if the mattress was wobbling. It did not feel like the whole mattress was moving but rather it felt that the inner foam was pressing up against the top layer of the mattress.

I have investigated into the bed frame, upon which there are no issues with stability. I have also contacted the producer of the mattress who hasn't yet informed me of what the issue is or could be.

I would like to ask what kind of material or technology could create such a sensation in the foam block?

I suspect that there is some sort of embedded technology or device inside the foam mattress that causes the foam block to wobble in such a manner, similar to an electric pulse almost. The movement feels localised to an area of the mattress when it occurs, however it also is experienced in several localised areas of the mattress.

I am not familiar with such technology and before pulling the bed apart to investigate, I'd like to get an understanding of what it might be and what I'm looking for. I plan to cut the foam block open and look inside and hopefully can get some information about what to expect.

I appreciate that the nature of my query is unusual, however it is of importance to me and any help would be much appreciated.

If there is any information required please let me know and I will provide it

Thank you in advance

I don't know of anything that could cause this sensation. Sounds like some sort of sensory issue, such as the feeling of falling when you're just drifting off. If it continues and is enough of a nuisance I'd suggest seeing a doctor.

Maybe there are one or more animals living in the bottom of the mattress.
Do you have a cat that is creeping under the bed?
Has someone lost a pet snake lately?

Use google to search for an answer. Also find the manufacturer and contact them about the issue. One other option is to go to a futon mattress store and ask the sales people.

Mattresses have structure but as far as I know futon mattresses do not because futons can be folded in half or thirds so as to conform to a bed or a couch configuration and any structural element in the mattress would likely impede that feature.

Hi all, I have a question. So from the derivation of the Isentropic process relationship PV^gamma = constant, there is a step dW = PdV, which can only be said for quasi-equilibrium (or reversible) processes. As such I believe PV^gamma = constant (and the family of equations) should not be applicable to just adiabatic processes? Ie, it should be applicable only for adiabatic + reversible = isentropic processes? However, I've seen couple of online notes/books, and...
Thread 'How can I find the cleanout for my building drain?'
I am a long distance truck driver, but I recently completed a plumbing program with Stratford Career Institute. In the chapter of my textbook Repairing DWV Systems, the author says that if there is a clog in the building drain, one can clear out the clog by using a snake augur or maybe some other type of tool into the cleanout for the building drain. The author said that the cleanout for the building drain is usually near the stack. I live in a duplex townhouse. Just out of curiosity, I...
I have an engine that uses a dry sump oiling system. The oil collection pan has three AN fittings to use for scavenging. Two of the fittings are approximately on the same level, the third is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch higher than the other two. The system ran for years with no problem using a three stage pump (one pressure and two scavenge stages). The two scavenge stages were connected at times to any two of the three AN fittings on the tank. Recently I tried an upgrade to a four stage pump...
