Question about a derivative and double angle formula

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on finding the derivative of the function sin²(x). The derivative is established as 2sin(x)cos(x), which can be expressed using the double angle formula as sin(2x). Participants confirm that this equivalence holds true, allowing the derivative to be represented in both forms.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic calculus concepts, specifically derivatives
  • Familiarity with trigonometric identities, particularly the double angle formulas
  • Knowledge of the sine and cosine functions
  • Ability to manipulate algebraic expressions involving trigonometric functions
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the derivation of trigonometric derivatives in calculus
  • Explore the double angle formulas for sine and cosine functions
  • Practice applying derivatives to various trigonometric functions
  • Learn about the implications of using different forms of derivatives in calculus
USEFUL FOR

Students studying calculus, mathematics educators, and anyone looking to deepen their understanding of trigonometric derivatives and identities.

If I am supposed to find the derivative of the equation sin^2(x) the derivative is
2sinxcosx, by the double angle formula can I say that the derivative is therefore sin2x or can I not do this because I am simply finding the derivative.

Yes you can, since the two are equivalent.
