Question: What Makes Light Move & Why Does It Travel at 299792458 mps?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The speed of light, measured at 299,792,458 meters per second, is a fundamental constant of nature with no underlying explanation. Light is classified as an electromagnetic wave, generated by processes such as electric currents exciting electrons in a light bulb. When these electrons return to their original energy levels, they emit light, similar to how a pencil falls when balanced on its tip. The numerical value of the speed of light arises from the definitions of the meter and the second.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electromagnetic waves
  • Familiarity with atomic structure and electron behavior
  • Basic knowledge of physical constants
  • Concept of energy levels in atoms
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties of electromagnetic waves
  • Study the behavior of electrons in atomic physics
  • Explore the significance of physical constants in science
  • Learn about the relationship between energy levels and light emission
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators in science, and anyone interested in the fundamental principles of light and electromagnetic theory.

The speed of light is a fundamental aspect of nature that has no underlying explanation. In short, that's just the way it works.

What makes the waves if you throw a stone into the water? The stone. So the light switch makes the light move. Light is an electromagnetic wave that has to be "created" somewhere. E.g. by an electric current that brings the electrons of the atoms in a light bulb to a higher level and when they fall back, which they will do the same way as a pencil falls down if placed on its peak, they emit light.

The number is simply a natural constant and the digits are because we've chosen meter and seconds in a way that results in this number.
