Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around Rijuven's CardioSleeve, a stethoscope add-on designed to facilitate the acquisition of a basic EKG trace during medical examinations. Participants explore its practicality, weight implications, and personal anecdotes related to similar concepts.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses interest in the CardioSleeve, questioning its weight impact on the stethoscope.
  • Another participant finds the idea innovative, reflecting on its simplicity.
  • A later reply provides a specific weight of 1.7oz for the CardioSleeve, addressing the earlier weight concern.
  • One participant shares a personal experience of creating a similar device for educational purposes, highlighting the use of a piezo pickup and oscilloscope to visualize heartbeats without additional electronics.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally express enthusiasm for the CardioSleeve concept, but there is no consensus on its practical implications or comparisons to existing methods.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the device's effectiveness and user experience remain unaddressed, and the discussion does not resolve the potential limitations of the CardioSleeve in clinical settings.

Who May Find This Useful

Medical professionals, educators in STEM fields, and individuals interested in innovative medical devices may find this discussion relevant.

Pretty interesting idea... A small 3-lead EKG pickup device that you attach to your stethoscope so you can acquire a basic EKG trace during your exam without having to pull out your monitor and place electrode patches on the patient... Has anyone used or seen these yet? I wonder how much weight it adds to the stethoscope...

Nice. That's definitely one of those "why didn't I think of that?" things.

From the link about 1/3 of the way down the page: Only 1.7oz.

I should have followed up with a device I made to show kids in a science class ten years ago:) I had an oscilloscope and a big lens to throw the output onto a large screen and used a styrofoam cup from Burger King with a Piezo pickup glued inside and then the signal going straight to the O'scope. Put the cup on a volunteer kid's chest and you could see the heartbeat directly on the screen, no electronics or amps needed, just the bare output of the piezo pickup going straightway to the scope and the heartbeat was visible!
Oh well, another invention lost by me:)
