Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the experience of a participant whose desktop PC has failed. Participants share their thoughts on the situation, offer support, and discuss potential causes and solutions for PC failures, particularly focusing on power supply issues and the notion of repurposing parts from old machines.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest viewing the situation as an opportunity to build a new PC rather than focusing on the loss of the old one.
  • There are humorous suggestions about performing rituals to revive the PC, including the use of resistors and chanting.
  • Several participants mention their own experiences with PC failures, particularly related to power supplies and RAM issues, expressing hope that the original poster's problem is similarly simple to fix.
  • One participant humorously refers to the revived PC as a "Zombie PC," suggesting it should be treated with caution.
  • Technical discussions arise regarding the importance of cleaning and cooling for PC longevity, as well as the implications of replacing old components.
  • There are references to humorous cultural elements, including quotes from Monty Python, which add a light-hearted tone to the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the humorous aspects of the situation and the idea of repurposing parts. However, there are varying opinions on whether to attempt to revive the old PC or to focus on building a new one, indicating a lack of consensus on the best approach.

Contextual Notes

Some participants share personal anecdotes about their own PC issues, which may not directly relate to the original poster's situation but contribute to the overall discussion of common PC problems.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in computer repair, PC building, or those experiencing similar issues with their own machines may find the shared experiences and suggestions relevant.

Two days ago my desktop PC died. I'm about to perform a little Techromancy in an attempt to bring my desktop back to life. Wish me luck.

If anyone wants to help, grab a few resistors from the nearest store, sprinkle them on the ground in an omega symbol, and chant 'Ohhmmm...' for me. Note that doing this in front of a mirror 3 times may result in the appearance of an Ohmcheeto. You have been warned.

Don't think of it as losing a PC. Think of it as gaining an opportunity to build a new one.

Let it go, Drakkith. Let it rest in pieces. Maybe even recycle it properly or reuse its parts. No point in reviving imploded PCs.

I know the feels - my wireless headphones I've had for five years recently broke.

Don't think of it as a dead PC. Think of it as a source of parts!

Mine died yesterday. Turned out to be a bad RAM chip. Hope that yours is equally simple to fix.

I'll keep my tail wagging, wishing you success

Yeah, I've often suspected you of having a defective power supply.

I wish that were it. I've got some kind of sleep issue or something. I'm always exhausted. Just had a sleep study done last night actually.

I had one of those. The power supply went bad and started shorting - to the motherboard. It would shutoff abruptly and restart, which was rather annoying. One of the managers thought I was not using the software or PC correctly.

Great that you were able to replace the power supply.

My old home PC had a motherboard go bad. My wife had a similar problem where some capacitors overheated and failed.

Periodic cleaning and ensuring proper cooling are key to longevity of a PC. Also, minimize vibration on high capacity HDs.

My PC did that several times in the last few years(after multiple organ transplants).

Well, in all fairness to my PC, the power supply was probably the oldest component in the case. I probably shouldn't be surprised it went out. I too 'transplanted' pretty much everything else in there over the past few years.

Ahh to be technical writer for computer manuals::

where i worked some wag actually wrote in a tech manual entitled
"How to use the Data General Nova Computer"

Attach fifty feet of quarter inch manila or nylon line to the Nova using a bowline or clove hitch knot
gently lower but do not throw the Nova over the bow
pay out line to approximately 3X depth of water
and secure to a bow cleat.

That's because your PC wasn't all the way dead, it was only mostly dead.
