AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around selecting a thesis topic for a graduate course in a quantum-related group focused on theoretical research without experimental equipment. The individual has a background in electrical and computational engineering and is seeking a topic that emphasizes engineering rather than pure physics. They express concern over their supervisor's inclination towards pure quantum physics topics, which does not align with their interests in computational approaches. Suggestions from the group highlight the importance of discussing potential topics with supervisors, as they can provide guidance tailored to the student's interests and institutional prospects. The individual is looking for topics that integrate computational methods with some physics elements, focusing on algorithms, coding, and programming.

Hello everyone, it's not really a technical issue, I just got into a graduate course, for a master degree, and I have to decide a thesis to work on. This group is quantum related, they do some quantum material research with computer on paper only, no other experimental equipment at all.
And...most of my background is under electrical and computational engineering, I am trying to find a topic that is not involving too much pure physics, but more about engineering,. I am currently doing research on it, but I thought it might be a good idea to seek for some suggestions here as well.
Please, any suggestions will be appreciated! Thank you!

Pick the one with the better advancement prospects for your institution and comfort level. Since this is very personal, we cannot really advise you.
The supervisor is most important here... most supervisors are happy to talk to prospective students: ask.

Thanks, well...the discussion with supervisor did not went too well, he is suggesting only pure quantum physics topics, as I hope to touch more computational engineering. Anyway, I am seeking for a topic that is somehow a little related to physics, but most of this work is dealing with algorithm, coding and program approaching. I am doing some searching, but not quite sure which fields are the right direction.

After a year of thought, I decided to adjust my ratio for applying the US/EU(+UK) schools. I mostly focused on the US schools before, but things are getting complex and I found out that Europe is also a good place to study. I found some institutes that have professors with similar interests. But gaining the information is much harder than US schools (like you have to contact professors in advance etc). For your information, I have B.S. in engineering (low GPA: 3.2/4.0) in Asia - one SCI...
I graduated with a BSc in Physics in 2020. Since there were limited opportunities in my country (mostly teaching), I decided to improve my programming skills and began working in IT, first as a software engineer and later as a quality assurance engineer, where I’ve now spent about 3 years. While this career path has provided financial stability, I’ve realized that my excitement and passion aren’t really there, unlike what I felt when studying or doing research in physics. Working in IT...
Hello, I’m an undergraduate student pursuing degrees in both computer science and physics. I was wondering if anyone here has graduated with these degrees and applied to a physics graduate program. I’m curious about how graduate programs evaluated your applications. In addition, if I’m interested in doing research in quantum fields related to materials or computational physics, what kinds of undergraduate research experiences would be most valuable?
