SUMMARY

The discussion centers on designing a lightweight and compact refrigeration system capable of maintaining a temperature of approximately 5 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes within a shoe box-sized volume. The primary constraints include a weight limit of less than 1 kg and minimal space occupation. Participants suggest exploring advanced cooling technologies rather than traditional methods like dry ice, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions in short-term temperature control.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of thermoelectric cooling systems
  • Familiarity with insulation materials and their thermal properties
  • Knowledge of lightweight materials suitable for refrigeration design
  • Basic principles of heat transfer and temperature regulation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research thermoelectric coolers (TECs) and their applications in portable refrigeration
  • Explore advanced insulation techniques to minimize thermal loss
  • Investigate lightweight materials such as aerogels for construction
  • Learn about microcontroller-based temperature control systems for precise regulation
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, product designers, and hobbyists focused on developing portable refrigeration solutions for short-term applications.

Hello Guys,

This is my first time posting here - just wondering if anyone has some insight on a project that I am working on. I want to be able to temperature control an insulated shoe box sized volume at ~5 degrees Celsius for about 20 minutes. The main constraints are that I would need the temperature control system to be lightweight (<1kg) and occupy only a small fraction of the shoe box volume.

Any ideas would be welcomed! I would rather not just throw a block of dry ice in the container, though.

You've about optimized it.
