SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the classification of soil types SM (Silty Sand) and SC (Clayey Sand) according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Participants emphasize that the suitability of these soil types as fill material is contingent upon the load and conditions of the structure placed above the fill. No definitive conclusion is reached regarding their general effectiveness as fill material, highlighting the importance of context in soil selection.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS)
  • Knowledge of soil mechanics and properties
  • Familiarity with construction load requirements
  • Experience in geotechnical engineering principles
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties of SM and SC soil types in detail
  • Study the impact of load-bearing requirements on fill material selection
  • Explore best practices for soil compaction techniques
  • Learn about soil testing methods for construction applications
USEFUL FOR

Geotechnical engineers, construction project managers, and civil engineers involved in site preparation and fill material selection will benefit from this discussion.

Hey guys just classified some soil according to USCS.
Came up with either SM or SC.

Been searching for about an hour on them but haven't stumbled upon anything that states whether they are good as a fill material or not.

Any ideas?

Welcome to PF.
It depends entirely on what you are going to put on top of the fill.
