SUMMARY

Smoke from a balcony can be detected by individuals living below the smoker due to the principles of diffusion and air movement. While warm air rises, smoke can disperse and travel downwards, especially in the absence of wind. The discussion confirms that even without a breeze, the odor can permeate a significant area, allowing those below to experience the smell. In some cases, the scent can be strong enough to be noticed from considerable distances.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of diffusion principles in physics
  • Basic knowledge of air movement and thermodynamics
  • Familiarity with the behavior of smoke in different environmental conditions
  • Awareness of how odors disperse in the atmosphere
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of diffusion in gases
  • Explore thermodynamics related to air movement
  • Investigate the effects of environmental factors on odor dispersion
  • Study the impact of wind and temperature on smoke behavior
USEFUL FOR

Individuals interested in physics, environmental science students, and anyone studying the effects of air quality and odor dispersion in urban settings.

Good day, everyone,
I have an uncommon question:
Man smokes in a balcony. Will the people, who are below him will smell that? Or just people who live above the man?
I guess warm air is going up, but how about a smell, diffusion says that molecules are moving disorderly, so I completely lost my mind whether smell can be smelled if you are below.
This is some kind a exercise, but I can't recognize which physics field it belongs to.

Thank you!

So long as it's warm --- which isn't long for smoke.

No breeze, a smoker can "perfume" a fairly large volume of air.

So the answer is yes? People below can smell that?

Definitely. If it's left-handed tobacco, some can smell it on the next block.
