Snowball Shape Debate: Circle vs Sphere

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the shape of a snowball, with participants debating whether it is a circle or a sphere. The topic touches on concepts of geometry and dimensionality.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants explore the definitions of shapes, questioning the dimensionality of a snowball versus a snowflake. Some express confusion over terminology and potential translation issues.

Discussion Status

The conversation is ongoing, with various interpretations of the shapes being discussed. Some participants have offered clarifications about the geometric properties of circles and spheres, while others are questioning the assumptions behind the original question.

Contextual Notes

There appears to be some ambiguity regarding the terms used, particularly between "snowball" and "snowflake," which may affect the discussion. Additionally, the dimensionality of the shapes is a point of contention.

Hi Asian Girl!

I think you mean snowflake.

If so, I agree with you:
Large, well formed snowflakes are relatively flat and have six approximately identical arms …

You'll have to ask Asian Girl's friend!

… you're trying to get an introduction, aren't you … ?

My question (and, I suspect, Defennder's, except for a typo) would be "Why would a snowflake be shaped like a circle". All snowflakes are more like 6 pointed stars.

I don't know what language Asian Girl speaks but it might be a translation problem. A circles is "flat"- two dimensional- in a plane. A sphere is 3 dimensional.

(Very strictly speaking, a snowball is a "ball"- a "sphere" is the surface of a ball.)

But a 6 pointed star is like a circle …

… especially when it's spinning beautifully! :!)
