SUMMARY

The discussion centers on Quick Calculation 12.10 from Zwiebach's string theory textbook, specifically addressing the differentiation of basis states. The key question is whether the distinction lies in the ground states, denoted as p^+ and p_T, or in the parameters λ_{n,I}. One participant suggests that if p^+ and p_T are indeed different, it would be trivial based on the reference to problem 12.184. The conversation indicates a need for clarity on the definitions and implications of these states within the context of string theory.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of string theory concepts, particularly basis states.
  • Familiarity with Zwiebach's textbook and its problem sets.
  • Knowledge of momentum representations in string theory, specifically p^+ and p_T.
  • Basic comprehension of the parameters λ_{n,I} in the context of string states.
NEXT STEPS
  • Review problem 12.184 in Zwiebach's textbook for context on the triviality of basis state differences.
  • Study the implications of ground states in string theory, focusing on p^+ and p_T.
  • Explore the mathematical definitions and roles of λ_{n,I} in string theory.
  • Investigate additional resources or discussions on basis states in string theory for deeper insights.
USEFUL FOR

Students of string theory, particularly those studying Zwiebach's textbook, and educators seeking to clarify concepts related to basis states and their implications in theoretical physics.

Homework Statement

For Quick Calculation 12.10, when Zwiebach says that the basis states are different, does he mean their ground states, i.e. p^+ and p_T are different or that their [tex]\lambda_{n,I}[/tex] or either?

I think that if the p^+ and p_T are different then it is trivial because of 12.184.
