AI Thread Summary
Push notifications for Physics Forums require user permission and can be activated through the account settings under preferences. Users must remain signed in to receive notifications, which will appear as alerts in the browser or desktop when enabled. Notifications are specific to the device on which they are activated, meaning they need to be re-enabled if the user logs out. Some users have reported issues with enabling notifications, suggesting that their devices or browsers may not be supported. Clarification from the forum's administration may be needed to resolve these concerns.

I found through a search some brief commentary but not enough. Exactly how use and activate and deactivate Push Notifications for Physicsforums?

I see some wording at bottom of forum's front page:
Physics Forums would like your permission to enable push notifications.

Physics news on Phys.org
I checked my Profile and I have them enabled (not surprising since I'm a Mentor/Admin and need to get notifications about basically everything). The only place I see them showing up is when I start up my browser (Firefox), and see a parenthetical number next to the PhysicsForums icon. Here is a screenshot of that right now, but there is no parenthetical number after the PF icon since I've clicked in and looked at all the recent updates:

I think we'll need @Greg Bernhardt to clarify further.

Grant permissions and you'll get browser/desktop notifications of threads you're watching

I usually open a browser, visit the PF site, sign-in to PF site, and then see if any alert notifications in the bell-icon.

I usually use incognito mode Google Chrome. If I would enable PF push notifications, where would I see the PF notifications, in case I am not signed in to Physicsforums?

Maybe still is more about this which I do not understand. If enable Push Notifications, how does Physics forums know to put notifications into/onto computer desktop? physicsforums has no connection to computer desktop and none to browser; until I sign in to PF.

You may need to remain signed in

That will be good enough for practical purposes. I would continue onward just signing in when I am interested, and then sign out upon done with the session.

What about if on mobile?

Continuing to try to look into this, I find pathway USER > account > settings > preferences,... down at the bottom or near bottom is "push notifications" and a button for "enable push notifications", and then some description, saying "Enabling push notifications requires a supported device. Enabling push notifications will enable them for this device only. If you log out of this device, you will need to re-enable push notifications."

Later I went back to the link on main page of physicsforums, clicked on it for enabling Push Notifications. Nothing seems to happen. Nothing changed. I take then that the desktop computer or the browser(?) is or are not supported.
