SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a Special Operations Officer transitioning from military service to civilian employment, specifically in the field of physics. The officer holds a master's degree in Physics from the Naval Postgraduate School and seeks guidance on leveraging their unique background for career opportunities. Participants suggest pursuing a PhD to enhance job prospects, particularly in research roles at defense contractors or national laboratories like the NRL, which offers programs for employees to obtain PhDs. The consensus is that a military background can be advantageous in the defense industry, despite potential biases in some academic circles.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of military career paths and their relevance to civilian roles
  • Familiarity with the defense industry and research opportunities
  • Knowledge of PhD programs and their application in national labs
  • Insight into the job market for physics graduates, particularly in defense and research sectors
NEXT STEPS
  • Research PhD programs available through the NRL and other DoD labs
  • Explore job opportunities at defense contractors specializing in weapons systems
  • Investigate the Palace Knight Program and similar initiatives for federal employees
  • Network with professionals in the defense industry to uncover potential job openings
USEFUL FOR

Individuals transitioning from military service to civilian careers, particularly those with a background in physics and interest in research or defense contracting. This discussion is beneficial for veterans seeking to understand their career options and leverage their unique experiences.

Lots of organizations would like a person with your background, DOE/NNSA, DTRA, DARPA to name a few. Are you on good terms with your NPS advisor? They would be a good first point of contact. He/She should have sponsor funding which would be your foot in the door.

Hiring freeze affects all of those, the govt isn't hiring until at least April at the earliest (so says the HR person I am dealing with at a govt agency).

Ehh... The hiring freeze isn't going to last forever. Organizations that have mission critical needs will find a way to work the system.

I didn't say it was permanent, I just said no applications were being processed until at least April 24th according to my source. My offer letter was stopped and is in limbo because of the freeze and it only needed one more signature before being sent to me.
