Static Electricity: Positive & Negative Charges

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the concepts of static electricity, specifically focusing on positive and negative charges and their interactions. Participants are exploring the behavior of charged objects, particularly in the context of electrostatic induction.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants are attempting to understand the reasoning behind the charging of two spheres when a charged rod is brought near them. There is confusion regarding the nature of the charges on the spheres and whether both can be positive.

Discussion Status

Some guidance has been provided regarding the process of electrostatic induction and the resulting charges on the spheres. However, there remains uncertainty among participants about the underlying principles and assumptions related to charge distribution.

Contextual Notes

Participants express confusion about the nature of the charges and the conditions under which they accumulate, indicating a need for further clarification on the fundamental concepts of charge interactions.

when the rod is put near to sphere A a positive charge accumulated on it and a negative charge on sphere B but I am really confused i think that both spheres can be positive so if you have an answer pls help and explain it

Your answer and your explanation are correct. Due to electrostatic induction, A becomes positive and B negative, and when they are separated, the charges are preserved.
