SUMMARY

During spinal shock, reflexes are absent only below the level of the spinal cord lesion. Once spinal shock resolves, reflexes below the lesion can become hyperactive, particularly in cases of complete lesions and when the injury is above T6, leading to autonomic hyperreflexia. This understanding is crucial for assessing neurological recovery and managing patient care effectively.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of spinal cord anatomy and physiology
  • Knowledge of spinal shock and its clinical implications
  • Familiarity with reflex arcs and their functions
  • Awareness of autonomic nervous system responses
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the mechanisms of spinal shock and recovery
  • Study the clinical signs of autonomic hyperreflexia
  • Explore rehabilitation strategies for spinal cord injury patients
  • Learn about the differences between complete and incomplete spinal cord lesions
USEFUL FOR

Medical professionals, particularly neurologists, physiotherapists, and healthcare providers involved in spinal cord injury management and rehabilitation.

During spinal shock, are all spinal reflexes gone, or only reflexes below the lesion. Thanks

Thanks  just to clarfiy, after spinal shock reflexex below become hyperactive right?

Yes, especially if the lesion is complete (and above T6 for autonomic hyperreflexia).
