AI Thread Summary
The discussion highlights notable improvements in Taurozzi's Oto cycle engine, emphasizing the necessity of piston rings for sealing despite claims of a 50% increase in fuel economy, which are deemed misleading. The conversation also suggests that the internal combustion engine, including the Taurozzi Motor, is nearing obsolescence as electric vehicles gain traction. Extended range electric vehicles, which utilize genset trailers for power, are presented as the future of automotive technology. Participants debate the practicality and costs associated with transitioning to this technology compared to traditional engines. Overall, the thread reflects a shift in focus from internal combustion engines to more sustainable electric solutions.

Notable improvement on the Oto cycle engine, invented by Taurozzi in the early 1970s.

The idea is sound, but there must still be rings that seal the piston gap. Those rings are pushed out against the cylinder walls by combustion gasses that get behind them from the cylinder. That seal is still required. The claim of 50% improvement in economy over the regular engine, I am certain, is false marketing.

The internal combustion piston engine is now reaching the end of its domination.
That also includes the Taurozzi Motor.

Tell that to the all electric vehicles that constantly need a gas/diesel powered generator trasported by an ICE cargo van or utility truck to recharge as a common roadside assistance. Honestly, the real future of the automobile is in extended range electric vehicles

Like these! :wink:

A genset trailer is a range extending device for use with battery electric vehicles consisting of an internal combustion engine and an electric generator (collectively called a genset). They run on traditional fuels such as gasoline or diesel and are sized to provide the continuous power requirements for the vehicle they are used with. Most small to midsized passenger vehicles would require 15 to 20 kW (20 to 27 hp) for unlimited freeway travel using fuel. Larger vehicles could require 30 kW (40 hp) or more of power depending on how heavy or un-aerodynamic they happen to be. This essentially converts an electric vehicle into a series-hybrid.

@dom_quixote
name three benefits of this design over Oto (Otto cycle) engine please?

I'm not sure how much anyone is willing to pay to machine those LOL

Thread 'What type of toilet do I have?'
I was enrolled in an online plumbing course at Stratford University. My plumbing textbook lists four types of residential toilets: 1# upflush toilets 2# pressure assisted toilets 3# gravity-fed, rim jet toilets and 4# gravity-fed, siphon-jet toilets. I know my toilet is not an upflush toilet because my toilet is not below the sewage line, and my toilet does not have a grinder and a pump next to it to propel waste upwards. I am about 99% sure that my toilet is not a pressure assisted...
After over 25 years of engineering, designing and analyzing bolted joints, I just learned this little fact. According to ASME B1.2, Gages and Gaging for Unified Inch Screw Threads: "The no-go gage should not pass over more than three complete turns when inserted into the internal thread of the product. " 3 turns seems like way to much. I have some really critical nuts that are of standard geometry (5/8"-11 UNC 3B) and have about 4.5 threads when you account for the chamfers on either...
Thread 'Physics of Stretch: What pressure does a band apply on a cylinder?'
Scenario 1 (figure 1) A continuous loop of elastic material is stretched around two metal bars. The top bar is attached to a load cell that reads force. The lower bar can be moved downwards to stretch the elastic material. The lower bar is moved downwards until the two bars are 1190mm apart, stretching the elastic material. The bars are 5mm thick, so the total internal loop length is 1200mm (1190mm + 5mm + 5mm). At this level of stretch, the load cell reads 45N tensile force. Key numbers...
