The Dependent Variable in an Experiment

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying the correct term for a variable in an experiment that is affected by another variable. Participants explore the definitions and spellings of "dependent" and "independent" variables, along with their characteristics and roles in experimental contexts.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that the variable in question is affected by the independent variable, indicating it is a dependent variable.
  • Another participant agrees, stating that dependent variables depend on independent variables for their values.
  • A different participant expresses uncertainty about the spelling and suggests that the second letter is 'A' and the seventh letter is 'E'.
  • There is a request for clarification on the total number of letters in the term, with a participant confirming there are nine letters.
  • One participant proposes that the variable could also be referred to as the 'explanatory' variable, citing Wikipedia.
  • Another participant questions the correctness of the 'A' in their earlier assumption and considers the term 'independent' as a possible answer.
  • Some participants express confusion regarding the relationship between the terms 'dependent' and 'independent', with one stating that both terms contain an 'E'.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the correct term, with some favoring "dependent" and others leaning towards "independent." The discussion remains unresolved regarding which term is definitively correct.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the discussion regarding the clarity of definitions and the spelling of the terms, which may affect participants' conclusions.

The ? variable is the part of the experiment that is affected by the independent variable.

THANKS

i think you are referring to dependent variables, they 'depend' on the independent variables for their values.

I have tried dependent but it does not fit. The second letter is A and the seventh letter is E.

how many letters total?

there are 9 total letters.

 PLEASE HELP!

are you sure the 'a' is right, i can't think of anything else right now

The A comes from the question,,,, The ? variable is the part of the experiment that is being tested or the part that is changed by the person doing the experiment. Therefore I put independent causing the A so I hope that is right.

Nope that is 10 letters. Is the independent answer right?

well i 'explanatory' is 11, but I'd say independent is right, but that's not working with dependent (not that explanatory would) and I can't think of a different word than dependent.

EDIT: I had meant using explanatory instead of independent in my previous post

I will just put dependent the old hag prolly spelt it wrong anyway.

ah! I see it, its 'dependent' and 'independent' both with an E, that will fix the problem.
