Thermonuclear device to destroy hurricanes

AI Thread Summary
Detonating a thermonuclear device in the eye of a hurricane would have minimal impact on the storm's overall structure and energy. The hurricane's vast scale, typically ranging from 300 to 700 kilometers in radius, far exceeds the effective blast radius of a nuclear weapon, which would only affect a small area. While the explosion might create some localized wind changes, it would not significantly disrupt the hurricane. A 20 megaton bomb, for instance, would only influence a radius of about 47 kilometers, insufficient to alter the hurricane's intensity or trajectory. Overall, the energy produced by a hurricane vastly surpasses that of a typical nuclear device.

Hello All,

I hope this is the right place to post this.

I’ve always wondered about this. What will a Thermonuclear device do to a hurricane if detonated in it's eye?

Thanks in advance.

Annoy it.
Hurricanes have rather a lot of energy, a tiny little weedy H-bomb isn't going to do much to it.

The device would probably blow up.

The hurricane, as stated, would probably be almost totally unaffected. It would have *more* of an effect if you detonated it at the strongest part of the hurricane, because it would partially create a countering wind that would create a small ripple in the hurricane where the wind wouldn't be as strong.

Your typical hurricane is what, between 300 and 700 km of radius? A nuclear device would affect a pretty wide range with radiation, but probably only the blast radius would affect the wind. A 20 megaton bomb might affect a radius of something like 47 km? Hardly enough to disrupt a large hurricane.

Just ONCE, I wanted to see a post titled Status Update that was not a blatant, annoying spam post by a new member. So here it is. Today was a good day here in Northern Wisconsin. Fall colors are here, no mosquitos, no deer flies, and mild temperature, so my morning run was unusually nice. Only two meetings today, and both went well. The deer that was road killed just down the road two weeks ago is now fully decomposed, so no more smell. Somebody has a spike buck skull for their...
