Time: Physical Existence or Perception? Current Opinions

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the nature of time, asserting that it is not a physical entity but rather a measurement akin to spatial distance. The consensus is that time is defined by clock measurements, highlighting the inability to traverse time as we do with spatial dimensions. The conversation acknowledges the lack of understanding regarding the fundamental nature of time, emphasizing the challenges in discussing this topic due to its philosophical complexities and the tendency for low-quality discourse.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts related to time and space
  • Familiarity with measurement principles in both temporal and spatial contexts
  • Knowledge of philosophical perspectives on time
  • Awareness of common logical fallacies in philosophical debates
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the concept of time in physics, focusing on Einstein's theory of relativity
  • Explore philosophical texts on the nature of time, such as those by Henri Bergson
  • Investigate the implications of time perception in psychology
  • Examine the role of time in various scientific disciplines, including cosmology and quantum mechanics
USEFUL FOR

Philosophers, physicists, and anyone interested in the theoretical and practical implications of time as a concept.

I cannot conceive of time as an actual physical existence. What are the current opinions on what time is?

Put simply, time is that which a clock measures in much the same way that spatial distance is that which a ruler measures. The key differences being that we cannot move freely back and forth through time like we can through our spatial dimensions and we cannot be stationary along the time axis. It is currently unknown why this is so.

Unfortunately, past experience has shown that threads on time itself tend to be of poor quality, full of philosophical musings that are unanswerable, and attract personal opinions and crackpots like honey attracts ants, so I'm going to have to lock this thread.
