Astrophysics is on a quest to discover if Earth is a cosmic rarity or just one of many "Goldilocks" worlds. Much of this hope rests on the James Webb Space Telescope and the TRAPPIST-1 system, which features seven Earth-sized planets—four of which sit in the habitable zone.

However, a highly anticipated new study by Piaulet-Ghorayeb and colleagues regarding TRAPPIST-1d has dampened expectations. Their findings suggest the planet lacks an Earth-like atmosphere. While the team ruled out several atmospheric compositions, the true nature of TRAPPIST-1d remains a mystery, leaving us still searching for proof of a second Earth.
