SUMMARY

Einstein's formula E=mc² is essential for calculating the energy equivalent of a particle's rest mass. The more comprehensive equation E²=p²c²+m²c⁴ incorporates momentum, making it applicable to particles without rest mass, such as photons. This distinction highlights the formula's broader significance in physics, particularly in relativistic contexts. Understanding these equations is crucial for grasping fundamental concepts in modern physics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of physics principles, particularly relativity
  • Familiarity with the concepts of mass and energy
  • Knowledge of momentum in physics
  • Understanding of the speed of light (c) as a constant
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the implications of E=mc² in nuclear physics
  • Explore the derivation and applications of E²=p²c²+m²c⁴
  • Investigate the role of photons in quantum mechanics
  • Learn about relativistic momentum and its effects on particle physics
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators, and anyone interested in the foundational principles of energy and mass in the context of relativity and modern physics.

im pretty sure everyone's familiar with einsteins formula E=mc2 but what is this formula for? E2=m2c4

Physics news on Phys.org
It's the same equation but with both sides squared. It's like 7E=7mc2 -- not an independent piece of information.

Who might be thinking of the formula

E^2 = p^2c^2+m^2c^4

E=mc^2 is fine for determining the energy equivalent for the rest mass of a particle. The formula above is more general as it also includes the momentum of the particle and also works for the photon, which has no rest mass.
