SUMMARY

The term "puff" is a colloquial shorthand used by engineers and technicians to refer to a picofarad (pF), which is a unit of capacitance equal to 10^-12 Farads. This slang is commonly used in informal discussions among professionals in the electronics field. Understanding this terminology is essential for effective communication in environments where capacitors are frequently discussed. The playful nature of the term reflects a lighthearted culture within engineering circles.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of electrical engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with capacitance and its units, specifically picofarads (pF)
  • Knowledge of electronic components, particularly capacitors
  • Awareness of informal communication styles in technical fields
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the different types of capacitors and their applications
  • Learn about capacitance measurement techniques and tools
  • Explore the significance of unit conversions in electronics

'puff' capacitor??

I work with a bunch of engineers/techs and they refer to (for example) a 100pF cap as a "100 puff" cap. What the hell are they talking about? Is this slang

LOL. It's verbal shorthand for a picofarad, 10^-12 Farads.

No, silly. pF the magic dragon.

Now, is it pronounced GigaWatts, or JigaWatts? That's a much more important question.

Code:
Puff the magic capacitor lived by the inductor,
And wallowed in the coulomb charge in a land called resonance.

Little Jackie paper was a dielectric,
Not as good as polypropylene or other fancy polymers. Oh
