Understanding the Truth behind 2 ≥ √2

Click For Summary
The expression 2 ≥ √2 is true because 2 is greater than the square root of 2, which is approximately 1.414. The symbol "≥" indicates that 2 is either greater than or equal to √2, and in this case, it is strictly greater. The discussion emphasizes the importance of understanding the mathematical symbols and their meanings in inequalities. It clarifies that while 2 is indeed larger than √2, it is not equal to it. This highlights the fundamental principles of comparing numbers in mathematics.

Why is this true? It is bigger but it is not equal to

The symbol is read "Greater than or equal to."

Thank you :)

Note that except when writing computer code or in a plain text environment you should always use the ≥ symbol (LaTeX \ge ## \ge ##), or when writing by hand alternatively ## \geqslant ##.

Here is a little puzzle from the book 100 Geometric Games by Pierre Berloquin. The side of a small square is one meter long and the side of a larger square one and a half meters long. One vertex of the large square is at the center of the small square. The side of the large square cuts two sides of the small square into one- third parts and two-thirds parts. What is the area where the squares overlap?
