Understanding Thermodynamics in an Experiment: Laws at Play

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on the application of thermodynamic laws in a specific experiment involving heating a copper piece. The Zero Law of Thermodynamics is identified as relevant when the copper is heated on the stove, establishing thermal equilibrium. The Second Law is also applicable due to the chemical reaction that occurs when copper oxide forms. The participants seek clarification on the presence of the First and Third Laws of Thermodynamics in this context.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the Four Laws of Thermodynamics
  • Basic knowledge of chemical reactions and heat transfer
  • Familiarity with thermal equilibrium concepts
  • Experience with experimental setups in thermodynamics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the First Law of Thermodynamics and its application in closed systems
  • Research the Third Law of Thermodynamics and its implications for absolute zero
  • Explore practical examples of thermal equilibrium in experiments
  • Investigate the role of heat transfer in chemical reactions
USEFUL FOR

Students studying thermodynamics, educators teaching physics concepts, and researchers conducting experiments involving heat and chemical reactions.

Homework Statement

Hello.

I'm starting to study thermo and I'm kind of confused.

In this experiment: http://sci-toys.com/scitoys/scitoys/echem/echem2.html

Note: I'm not talking about about the actual solar cell, I'm just talking about the heating up part (until the black layer part).

Homework Equations

What thermodynamics laws are present?

The Attempt at a Solution

I think that the zero law is present when the copper is on the stove in the beginning.

Also, the second law is present because there's a chemical reaction when oxide is formed.

Am I right? How could the first and third law be present?
