Can some one tell me how sin, tan and cos came about. I know the equations, but i want to know how it brought about.
The history of trigonometry, particularly the functions sine, tangent, and cosine, traces back to ancient civilizations, notably the Babylonians and Greeks. Hipparchus, in the 2nd century BC, created a trigonometric table that laid the groundwork for future developments. Ptolemy's Almagest further refined this with a comprehensive table of chords, while Indian astronomers introduced the sine function. By the 10th century, Muslim scholars advanced trigonometry significantly, establishing the sine and tangent functions and producing highly accurate tables. The evolution continued with contributions from European mathematicians, culminating in Euler's definition of trigonometric functions in terms of complex numbers in the 18th century.
PREREQUISITESMathematicians, historians of science, educators, and students interested in the development of trigonometry and its applications in various fields.
