Uranus May Have Two Dark Unseen Moons

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Astronomers are currently analyzing Hubble Space Telescope data to identify two potential dark, unseen moons orbiting Uranus. These moons, estimated to be 4 km and 14 km in diameter, have not yet been visually confirmed in existing imagery. The expectation is that all gas giants, including Uranus, likely possess undiscovered moons, highlighting the ongoing exploration and study of our solar system's outer planets.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Hubble Space Telescope data analysis
  • Familiarity with celestial mechanics and moon formation
  • Knowledge of gas giant characteristics
  • Basic astronomy terminology related to planetary bodies
NEXT STEPS
  • Research Hubble Space Telescope's imaging capabilities and data retrieval methods
  • Study the formation and characteristics of gas giants in our solar system
  • Explore techniques for detecting small celestial bodies in distant orbits
  • Investigate previous discoveries of moons around gas giants
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, astrophysicists, and space enthusiasts interested in planetary science and the exploration of moons in our solar system.

I expect all the gas giants to have some undiscovered moons. 4 and 14 km are tiny.

I don't see them in Andy's wonderful pictures.
