Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of utilizing 60# steam to generate electrical power, particularly in the context of optimizing plant operations during periods of low demand and shutdowns. Participants explore potential methods and considerations for harnessing excess steam effectively.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the possibility of generating electrical power from 60# steam.
  • Another participant notes that while it is possible, the efficiency of a steam plant is largely dependent on operating pressure, suggesting that 60# is relatively low.
  • A participant expresses interest in optimizing power generation using excess 60# steam that is sometimes vented during low demand periods.
  • One participant questions why the boiler cannot simply be turned down to manage steam production.
  • A response clarifies that the boiler is still necessary for other parts of the plant during partial shutdowns.
  • Another participant asks for clarification on the amount of excess steam available and suggests contacting GE for potential solutions involving small steam turbines.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best approach to utilize the excess steam, and multiple competing views regarding the efficiency and management of steam generation remain present.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks specific details on the volume of excess steam and the operational constraints of the plant, which may influence the feasibility of proposed solutions.

Is it possible to use 60# steam to generate electrical power.

Engineering news on Phys.org
Certainly, though the efficiency of a steam plant depends mostly on its operating pressure and 60# is pretty low.

Thanks russ,
I am trying to utilize the excess 60# steam. Sometimes we vent the excess 60# steam due to low demand due to T&I shutdowns.

Generally, I am looking for an idea to optimize the plant power using the 60# steam.

regards,

This is partial T&I shutdown, the bolier still needed for the running part of the plant.

How much excess steam are we talking about? GE makes relatively small steam turbines - perhaps you could contact them: http://www.gepower.com/prod_serv/products/steam_turbines/en/downloads/steam_brochure.pdf
