AI Thread Summary
Utilizing excess 60# steam for electrical power generation is feasible, though efficiency may be limited due to the low pressure. The discussion highlights the challenge of venting excess steam during low demand periods, particularly during T&I shutdowns. Suggestions include exploring options to optimize power generation without fully turning down the boiler, which remains necessary for other plant operations. Contacting manufacturers like GE for small steam turbine solutions is recommended for potential implementation. Overall, optimizing the use of excess steam can enhance plant efficiency and reduce waste.

Is it possible to use 60# steam to generate electrical power.

Certainly, though the efficiency of a steam plant depends mostly on its operating pressure and 60# is pretty low.

Thanks russ,
I am trying to utilize the excess 60# steam. Sometimes we vent the excess 60# steam due to low demand due to T&I shutdowns.

Generally, I am looking for an idea to optimize the plant power using the 60# steam.

This is partial T&I shutdown, the bolier still needed for the running part of the plant.

How much excess steam are we talking about? GE makes relatively small steam turbines - perhaps you could contact them: http://www.gepower.com/prod_serv/products/steam_turbines/en/downloads/steam_brochure.pdf

Hi all, i have some questions about the tesla turbine: is a tesla turbine more efficient than a steam engine or a stirling engine ? about the discs of the tesla turbine warping because of the high speed rotations; does running the engine on a lower speed solve that or will the discs warp anyway after time ? what is the difference in efficiency between the tesla turbine running at high speed and running it at a lower speed ( as fast as possible but low enough to not warp de discs) and: i...
