AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on seeking recommendations for vacation enrichment programs at universities, particularly in math and sciences, with an emphasis on research opportunities. Participants express interest in programs in the USA, India, Australia, Japan, and South Korea, highlighting the importance of financial support for internships. One contributor notes the difficulty of obtaining a visa for paid internships in the US and suggests exploring options in other countries. Specific Indian summer research programs are recommended, including TIFR-VSRP, IIT Kanpur-SURGE, and HRI-VSP, which offer stipends and support for travel and accommodation. The conversation also touches on the potential for international students to participate in these Indian programs, suggesting they may be comparable to US-based Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs).

Anyone recommend me vacation enrichment programmes at universities? Preferably about maths / sciences, maybe involving basic research assignments... Please provide the web link with details too. Thanks!

What level of school are you in? Do you have any particular country or countries in mind? (e.g. if you're in Australia you might not want to go all the way to the USA.)

Hi,
Actually I have this same question that is summer research program during summer of 2011. But, I would like this in Physics. I'm from India & want to have a research experience anywhere preferably USA. I'm a fourth year undergraduate at IIT Kharagpur & have good knowledge of mathemtical methoda & programming in MATLAB,C & C++. Financial support at least partly is very essential during intern.
Thanks in advance.

The odds of you getting sponsored for a visa to come to the US for a summer paid internship are exceedingly low.

Thanks for the reply.
Will you please tell me any other countries where I have a good chance??

I'm from Singapore, doing a post-high school course / tertiary in Engineering
...looking for vacation programmes for prospective undergraduate students.

Australia is an option, so is Japan and South Korea... UK is fine but cost of living might be a problem.
USA is a big place, so I might cultivate a few options.

would anyone recommend the MIT vacation programs?

how would a person choose from the options available?

Don't forget India... lot of Indian institutes have started really good summer programs over the past few years. The more famous ones include:
TIFR-VSRP
IIT Kanpur-SURGE
HRI-VSP
although you can get great projects even in not-so-well-known places (I spent one summer in IOP Bhubaneswar and the next in TIFR)
All of them will arrange travel/accommodation etc. and pay you hefty stipends.

To the OP, some Indian places may actually take in international students, and I don't see why these should be much worse than typical REU's in the US.

Hope that helped!
