SUMMARY

The discussion centers on choosing between Warwick University and Durham University for an MMath degree. Both institutions are recognized for their strong mathematics programs, but Warwick offers a broader course structure, including options in physics, computer science, and economics. The STEP offer from Warwick is a significant factor, as Durham does not provide this option. Additionally, Coventry's industrial environment contrasts with Durham's more attractive and rural setting, which may influence the decision for international students.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of MMath degree structures
  • Familiarity with UK university systems
  • Knowledge of STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) requirements
  • Awareness of the geographical and cultural differences between Coventry and Durham
NEXT STEPS
  • Research Warwick University’s MMath course offerings and structure
  • Investigate Durham University’s college system and student life
  • Explore the implications of the STEP offer for Warwick’s admissions
  • Examine the local amenities and lifestyle differences between Coventry and Durham
USEFUL FOR

International students considering an MMath degree, prospective mathematics students evaluating university options, and individuals interested in the cultural and academic environments of Warwick and Durham.

I was recently accepted to both for an MMath degree and I'm having a bit of trouble deciding which to go too. I know they both have great courses. School reputation doesn't matter to me so much. Unfortunately I'm an international student as well, so I can't really visit to see exactly how it is. Wondering if anybody could help me out?

Thanks in advance

I don't know very much about either university. Both have a good reputation in maths. Warwick uni is based a large campus just outside Coventry, which is where I grew up. Coventry is ok, it's a medium sized industrial city, and it's close to Birmingham and reasonably close to London where there's a bit more going on. It's not very attractive though, and a few years ago at least the city centre had a reputation for being quite violent. I can't think of anything other than the uni(s) that would attract students to the city. I'm less familiar with Durham, though I have been there a few times as I have cousins living there. I believe the uni is college based, which will give a different feel to the place. The city is much smaller, and also much more attractive than Coventry which suffered from bombing during the second word war and ugly development projects afterwards. Durham has easier access to countryside, though it's also further north so the weather will likely be more rugged.

Warwicks reputation is brilliant for maths, durhams is also good, but not as good afaik. I also know that the course structure at Warwick gives you a lot of options to take from physics and computer science, as well as economics and obviously maths. Also, Warwick also give you a STEP offer if I'm correct and Durham does not, so perhaps your ability to meet that offer should be a consideration.

EDIT: Another thing, you really need to visit Warwick; some people hate Coventry, while others love it.
