SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on solving moment couple problems in statics, specifically using free body diagrams and the principles of equilibrium. Key methodologies include drawing free body diagrams, applying the equations ΣF = 0 and ΣM = 0, and calculating moments about the center of mass. Participants emphasize the importance of understanding the geometry involved, particularly the lever arms associated with forces acting on rollers. The conversation highlights the necessity of clarity in defining forces and moments to solve for unknowns effectively.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of free body diagrams in statics
  • Familiarity with equilibrium equations: ΣF = 0 and ΣM = 0
  • Knowledge of moment calculations and lever arms
  • Basic principles of mechanics involving forces and moments
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the application of free body diagrams in complex systems
  • Learn about calculating moments about the center of mass
  • Explore the concept of lever arms in detail
  • Practice solving various moment couple problems with different geometries
USEFUL FOR

Students and professionals in engineering, particularly those studying mechanics or statics, as well as anyone involved in solving moment couple problems in practical applications.

Not sure what you are doing with the angles. Both moments act in the x-y plane, so there shouldn't be any \hat{k} involved. The first moment acts in the -x direction (- \hat{i}); the second moment is at a 60 degree angle to the x-axis (find the components of that vector: it will have both an x and a y component).

 ...yeah, I realized that after I stared at it for a while.

Thanks again for ALL the help. My internet died around 2:30pm yesterday so I couldn't get back on at all until this morning, so I basically had to stare at it for a while, ask a few people--and am pretty sure I got it.
