Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around recommendations for textbooks suitable for self-studying medical imaging physics, particularly for students preparing for graduate studies in the field. Participants share their experiences and resources related to medical imaging education.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a need for textbook recommendations for self-study in medical imaging physics due to a lack of formal courses at their institution.
  • Another participant recommends "Essential Physics of Medical Imaging" by Bushberg et al. and "Physics of Radiology" by Wolbarst, providing ISBNs for both texts.
  • A third participant mentions using an IAEA publication titled "Radiation Oncology Physics: A Handbook for Teachers and Students" as a supplementary resource during a medical physics course, suggesting that free course materials from other institutions may also be beneficial for self-study.
  • A later reply endorses the recommendation of Bushberg et al. as a very good book for the subject.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the value of the recommended textbooks, particularly Bushberg et al., but there is no consensus on a single best resource, as multiple texts and supplementary materials are suggested.

Contextual Notes

Some resources mentioned are specific to certain courses or institutions, and the availability of free materials may vary. The effectiveness of self-study may depend on individual learning preferences and the depth of content required.

Who May Find This Useful

Students in physics or related fields considering a focus on medical imaging, educators looking for supplementary materials, and self-learners interested in medical imaging physics.

Hoping to go into Medical Imaging in grad school. I have a coupleish years left of my undergrad in physics. My school doesn't offer any medical imaging classes was wondering if anyone teaches or has taken a course and could recommend a text for a little self study.
Thanks.

These are two that I've used

Essential Physics of Medical Imaging by Bushberg et al (ISBN 0683301187)
Physics of Radiology by Wolbarst (ISBN 1930524226)

I took a medical physics course last year that contained a large amount of medical imaging material. We used an IAEA pdf (free) to supplement the professors course notes. Try to find the websites for some courses from other schools, most are not password protected and you can find slides which may make it easier to do self-directed study.

The IAEA publication is called "Radiation Oncology Physics: A Handbook for Teachers and Students" can be downloaded at: http://www-pub.iaea.org/MTCD/publications/PDF/Pub1196_web.pdf

Hope that helps.

I second Bushberg et al. It's a very good book.
