What differential equations do mechanical engineers need to solve problems?

Hi to all,

I am 4year mechanical engineering and I need help with one of my projects.

1) What Kinds of deferential equations needs a mechanical engineer to solve problems?

2) What is the “typical engineering problems”?

Consider the various dampened harmonic oscillator problems (mass + spring + shockabsorber) a book on Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE's) will cover these.
You can describe many masses coupled by springs yielding a system of linear ODE's.

Some of the more "interesting" problems arise when you consider non-linear ODE's.

Also consider the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow and the Heat/Diffusion equations. These are partial differential equations.

Your question is quite broad. I suggest you browse through wikipedia's various differential equation articles to see types of equations and their applications. Also go to your university library and browse through some math books on differential equations. They typically give applications as they classify the various types of DE's.
