Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying commonalities among a list of words provided by participants. The scope includes exploratory reasoning and playful engagement with language, focusing on phonetics, spelling, and patterns within the words.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the first group of words contains the "oo" sound, while others note that "cosmic" does not fit this pattern.
  • Another viewpoint indicates that the second group of words contains the letter "u".
  • Some participants mention that the third group includes words with the letter "e".
  • One participant humorously points out that all the words are in English and composed of letters.
  • Another participant reflects on counting letters, consonants, vowels, and syllables, noting a lack of clarity on what is "odd".
  • There are claims that the words are unpronounceable to a Welshman, presented both seriously and humorously.
  • A participant proposes that all words have an odd-numbered first letter, though this is presented as a guess rather than a confirmed fact.
  • Some participants express frustration or confusion about the nature of the words and the discussion itself.
  • One participant suggests that there are sequences of three words sharing the same letter, but questions if that is the only pattern.
  • Another participant mentions the idea of numbering letters of the alphabet and finding that the words consist of letters with odd numbers.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on what the words have in common, with multiple competing views and interpretations remaining throughout the discussion.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about pronunciation and patterns in the words are not universally accepted, leading to varied interpretations of what constitutes their commonality.

They're all in English, they're all composed of letters, they are all on my monitor...

Well, I've counted letters, consonants, vowels, syllables and positions of specific letters, and other than the letter 'i' always being in an odd position (but not in every word), I'm not seeing anything odd.

I hope my answer is adequately hidden (I think Greg changed the background color slightly from what it used to be). If it is hidden, highlight below if you want to see what I think the answer is.

Edit: Hold on, I'm having trouble with color tags.

LOL, must be the weather.

I don't know what the right color tag is but for some reason, the old way of entering it wasn't taking...I've never had to embed the color code in quotes before.

Edit: Aha, got the right code so I can hide my guess at the answer and not spoil it for others if I'm right.

I looked at those words again---one thing I see is that there are sequences of three words that have the same letter---but, if that's all that it is...
