Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying a liquid phase chemical that is insoluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and would phase separate. Participants explore various chemical classes and potential candidates.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks information on liquid phase chemicals that are insoluble in THF.
  • Another participant suggests considering hydrocarbons, alcohols, amines, and ketones, noting that THF is a good solvent for many of these.
  • A third participant provides a link to a miscibility table, implying that it may help in identifying suitable chemicals.
  • A later reply acknowledges the usefulness of the table and mentions diethyl ether and dimethyl sulfoxide as potential candidates.
  • Another participant proposes that saturated brine may phase separate from THF, recalling its use in making POSS materials.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a specific chemical but share various suggestions and resources. Multiple competing views and potential candidates remain in the discussion.

Contextual Notes

Some suggestions depend on specific conditions or definitions of solubility and phase separation, which are not fully resolved in the discussion.

Hello,

I'm looking for a liquid phase chemical that would be insoluble in THF (that would phase separate). Does anyone know of one, or where I could find that information?

What type of chemicals fit your criteria? I remember doing solubility experiments with alcohols , amines , ketones ... THF is a good solvent for most of them. How about hydrocarbons?

You're out of luck

Hey that table was still very useful. I may be able to use diethyl ether and dimethyl sulfoxide. Thank you very much

Saturated brine will phase separate, I believe. That is how I remember making POSS materials.
