What is the average acceleration of a car

SUMMARY

The average acceleration of a car that accelerates from rest to 59 km/h in 9.0 seconds is calculated to be 1.82 m/s². To convert 59 km/h to meters per second, the formula used is 59 / 3.6, resulting in 16.4 m/s. The constant acceleration formula v = u + at is applied, where v is the final velocity, u is the initial velocity (0 m/s), and t is the time (9.0 seconds). This straightforward calculation provides a clear understanding of average acceleration in physics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts, specifically acceleration
  • Familiarity with unit conversion, particularly from km/h to m/s
  • Knowledge of the constant acceleration formula: v = u + at
  • Basic algebra skills for solving equations
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of kinematics in physics
  • Learn more about unit conversions between different measurement systems
  • Explore real-world applications of acceleration in automotive engineering
  • Investigate the effects of acceleration on vehicle performance and safety
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, automotive engineers, and anyone interested in understanding vehicle dynamics and acceleration calculations.

acceleration is definined to be change in velocity per unit time.

What is your change in velocity?

What is your change in time?

Can you take it from there?

First convert 59 Km/h into m/s:

59 * 1000 / 3600 (seconds in an hour) (m in a Km)

59 / 3.6 = 16.4 m/s

Then use the constant acceleration formula:

v = u + at
16.4 = 0 + a*9.0
a = 16.4/9.0
a = 1.82 m/s2

Generally, lavalamp, we lead them in the right direction and then let them figure it out from there. Thats the way their teachers would want it.

Oops, I'll try and remember that in future. :frown:
