What Is The Data Center Story?

I want to know what the data center craze is about. I was able to find only superficial discussions. Can anyone recommend a good online reference? In particular, it seems to me that sooner or later there will be a shakeout and the centers belonging to the losers will go bust. Second, computer hardware goes obsolete so rapidly. Will all those chips doing linear algebra be worthless in three years? And it seems quite likely that more efficient methods will be discovered. That always seems to happen.
