SUMMARY

The direction of the magnetic field at point P, located 0.040 m from a long, straight wire carrying a current of 5.0 A, is definitively out of the plane of the page. This conclusion is derived from the application of the right-hand rule, which indicates that the magnetic field circulates around the wire in a counterclockwise direction when viewed from the perspective of the current. The confusion regarding the use of Ampere's law highlights the need for a clear understanding of magnetic field directionality in relation to current flow.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the right-hand rule for magnetic fields
  • Familiarity with Ampere's law
  • Basic knowledge of electromagnetism concepts
  • Ability to visualize magnetic field lines around conductors
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the right-hand rule in detail for various current configurations
  • Explore Ampere's law applications in different geometries
  • Learn about magnetic field calculations for straight conductors
  • Investigate the effects of multiple currents on magnetic field direction
USEFUL FOR

Physics students, electrical engineers, and anyone interested in understanding electromagnetic fields and their applications in circuit design.

What is the direction of the magnetic field at point P due to the current in the wire?

Answer: out of the plane of the page

I can only see that the current is to the left. I don't understand how to figure out the direction of the magnetic force. :(

That didn't help.
