What is the Electronic Configuration of a Free Nitrogen Atom?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the electronic configuration of a free nitrogen atom, particularly in the context of its role in the ionic compound Gallium Nitride. Participants explore the electron arrangement of nitrogen and its ionization in relation to gallium.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant states that Gallium Nitride is an ionic compound and asks for the electron arrangement of the nitrogen ion.
  • Another participant questions the ion pairs involved in Gallium Nitride.
  • A different participant suggests that since Gallium has three positive ions, nitrogen must have three negative ions, implying that nitrogen gains three electrons.
  • There is a direct inquiry about the electronic configuration of a free nitrogen atom.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the electronic configuration of nitrogen or the specifics of its ionization in the context of Gallium Nitride, indicating multiple competing views and unresolved questions.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify the assumptions regarding the definitions of ions or the specifics of the electronic configuration, leaving some mathematical and conceptual steps unresolved.

here is my problem. Galium Nitride is an Ionic Compound. Work out the electron arrangement of the Nitrogen ion

First off perhaps. What are the ion pairs involved in this compound?

Galium has 3 positive ions. So i guess Nitrogen have 3 negative ions and therefore gaining 3 electrons.

OK, so what is the electronic configuration of a free nitrogen atom?
