SUMMARY

The half-life of an isotope is defined as the time required for half of the original amount of the isotope to decay. In the provided data, the mass of the isotope decreases from 40.00 grams to 20.00 grams over a period of 3 hours, indicating that the half-life is 3 hours. Subsequent measurements confirm this, as each 3-hour interval results in the mass being halved. Therefore, the half-life of the isotope in question is conclusively 3 hours.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of radioactive decay principles
  • Familiarity with isotopes and their characteristics
  • Basic knowledge of graphing data for analysis
  • Ability to interpret scientific data tables
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the concept of radioactive decay constants
  • Learn how to calculate half-lives using different isotopes
  • Explore the applications of half-life in radiometric dating
  • Investigate the effects of half-life on nuclear medicine
USEFUL FOR

Students in nuclear physics, researchers in radiochemistry, and professionals in medical physics will benefit from this discussion on determining the half-life of isotopes.

Hello All,

I would like to know how would I go about determining the half life of an isotope when this infoormation is give to me:

Time
(hr)
Mass Remaining of the Isotope
(g)
0.0 40.00
3.0 20.00
6.0 10.00
9.0 5.00
12.0 2.50
15.0 1.25
18.0 0.63

Would the half life be at how many hours 0 mass of the isotop remains?? Please help  :frown:

"Half life" refers to the interval of time required for the remaining amount of the isotope to be half of the original amount. The half life in your example should be quite evident from the data you provided.
