Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around calculating the pH of a solution formed by mixing 200 mL of 0.1 M NaOH with 300 mL of water. Participants explore the implications of dilution on pH and the behavior of NaOH in solution.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Mathematical reasoning
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about how NaOH reacts with water and its effect on pH, questioning the relevance of the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation.
  • Another participant asks for the pH of the original 0.1 M NaOH solution.
  • A participant clarifies that NaOH is already a sodium hydroxide solution mixed with water, prompting a question about how dilution affects concentration.
  • Another participant inquires about the OH ion concentration after dilution, the product of OH and H ion concentrations, and the resulting H ion concentration and pH.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion contains multiple viewpoints regarding the approach to calculating pH and the effects of dilution, with no consensus reached on the method or final pH value.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not resolved the assumptions regarding the calculations needed for pH, including the effects of dilution and the relationship between ion concentrations.

What is the pH when 200 mL 0.1 M NaOH is mixed with 300 mL water?

I am stuck here. I know V1C1 = V2C2 but I need help at this point. I don't know how NaOH reacts with water, and how this would affect the pH of the final solution. I also don't know whether or not I should use the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. Thank you in advance for your help!

What reaction? 0.1M NaOH is a sodium hydroxide solution. It's already mixed with some water. What happens to the concentration of a solution when you add more water?

What is the OH ion concentration after you add the 300 ml of water? What is the product of the OH ion concentration and the H ion concentration? What is the H ion concentration. What is the pH?

Thank you all!
