SUMMARY

The structure of a glycol with the formula C6H14O2 is confirmed to be a straight-chain compound based on the calculated Index of Hydrogen Deficiency (IDH) of zero. The H NMR data indicates 6 hydrogen atoms from methyl groups and 1 hydrogen from the hydroxyl groups, supporting the proposed structure. The suggested molecular structure is CH3-CH(OH)-CH2-CH(OH)-CH3, which aligns with the provided H NMR and IR spectra data.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of H NMR spectroscopy
  • Knowledge of IR spectroscopy
  • Familiarity with the Index of Hydrogen Deficiency (IDH) calculation
  • Basic organic chemistry concepts, particularly regarding glycol structures
NEXT STEPS
  • Study H NMR spectroscopy interpretation techniques
  • Explore IR spectroscopy applications in organic compound identification
  • Learn more about the structural characteristics of glycols
  • Investigate the synthesis methods for straight-chain glycols

Homework Statement

It is supposed to be a glycol with a formula of C6H14O2.
The H NMR integrations are 6H and 1H as indicated on the H NMR.

Homework Equations

IDH = (2+ (2*#C)- #H)/2

The Attempt at a Solution

I calculated the IDH to be zero meaning that it is a straight chain.
My guess is:
CH3 CH3

OH--C----C--OH
| |
CH3 CH3
I'm not sure if it's right though.
Thanks a lot to anyone who helps out!
