What's the Phantom Flash Above the Explosion?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the phenomenon observed in a MythBusters episode featuring an explosion, specifically a "phantom flash" seen above the explosion site. Participants explore potential explanations for this visual effect, considering various theories and observations related to lens flares, reflections, and other optical phenomena.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the phantom flash could be a lens flare, given its position relative to the explosion.
  • One participant proposes that the flash might be caused by combustible gas being ejected and igniting.
  • Another participant notes that part of the flash appears to exist before the explosion and persists afterward, indicating it may not be solely related to the explosion itself.
  • There is a suggestion that the flash could be a reflection, possibly due to the camera being behind glass or a lens effect.
  • One participant identifies a potential stretch of dirt road in the background that may contribute to the visual effect, though its color raises questions about this interpretation.
  • A participant humorously suggests that the flash could be the "Great Pumpkin," indicating a light-hearted take on the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express multiple competing views regarding the nature of the phantom flash, with no consensus reached on a single explanation. The discussion remains unresolved as various hypotheses are presented and debated.

Contextual Notes

Some observations depend on the specific frames from the episode, and there are unresolved questions about the optical effects and their origins. The discussion includes speculative reasoning without definitive conclusions.

Frames from the latest MythBusters episode, an explosion where they fuse some plates together.
You can see the phantom flash high above the explosion place.

What is it?
It appears to be in a right place for a lens flare, but doesn't look like one.

All that I can think of right off the top of my head is that maybe some combustible gas was ejected upward and ignited.

Could it just be a lens flare?
Seems like it - it's in a right place.
Just wanted to know if it could be something else.

Oops, lol, I skimmed your post and missed the last sentence where you said that, sorry.

Hey, I just noticed something. Part of that is already there before the explosion, and persists in the last frame. It's a bit more apparent in the second-last one. It's a right-bracket shaped discolouration directly above (touching) the right-hand dark brown section of the building.

Some kind of reflection to me, either inside the lens (so lens flare), or perhaps camera was hidden behind some kind of glass.

I hadn't considered that, Borek, but you might be right on that last point. The Mythbusters tend to shelter behind clear ballistic panels when blowing things up.

I believe that is a stretch of dirt road going up the hill behind the structure.

That's possible, of course, but it's pink. The way what it blends into the 'flare' is flawless.

Differences between first frame and next ones:

Looks like shockwave shaking camera on the third frame

Pumpkin of doom! That's pretty neat, I've never noticed that before.
