When should I start working on my Master degree and PhD

SUMMARY

In the discussion regarding pursuing a Master's degree and PhD in mechanical engineering, it is established that obtaining a Master's degree can significantly increase salary potential, while a PhD primarily benefits those seeking academic or research-oriented careers. Participants recommend gaining approximately five years of work experience before considering further education. The consensus is that while a Master's degree is advantageous for salary enhancement, a PhD does not guarantee a substantial pay increase and should be pursued only for specific career goals.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of career pathways in engineering, specifically mechanical engineering.
  • Familiarity with the academic requirements for Master's and PhD programs.
  • Knowledge of salary trends in the engineering field.
  • Awareness of the differences between industry and academic career trajectories.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research salary impacts of a Master's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Explore the academic requirements and career opportunities associated with a PhD in engineering.
  • Investigate the benefits of work experience prior to pursuing advanced degrees.
  • Learn about the differences between industry roles and academic positions in engineering.
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineers, career advisors, and students considering advanced degrees in engineering who seek to understand the implications of further education on career and salary outcomes.

Hello, I am currently doing a coop with a nuclear power company as a mechanical engineer. I was wondering if it is worth it to keep going with my education as far as a masters degree then phd, or will it not make a difference in pay?

get an experience first and then do your Master. (and yes the Master will raise your salary).
like 5 years of work experience and then go back to school.
get a PhD if you want to go into the academic field like being a professor but about the paying thing ,a PhD won't make a big difference.

Getting a master's degree can help increase your pay. Getting a PhD may or may not but that is a whole different animal that you should only do if you want a career in research.
