Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding a quality Dewar flask suitable for liquid nitrogen use, with a budget of around $400. Participants share suggestions for purchasing options, including new and used flasks, while also engaging in light-hearted commentary about the purpose of the gift.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about the category of the thread but seeks advice on purchasing a Dewar flask as a gift for their physics teacher.
  • Another participant provides a link to a Dewar flask that exceeds the stated budget, indicating it may not be a viable option.
  • Suggestions for affordable options include links to specific products within the budget, including a plastic dewar flask designed for LN2.
  • Some participants mention the possibility of purchasing used Dewar flasks from platforms like eBay, suggesting this could be a cost-effective alternative.
  • A humorous suggestion is made to consider a Klein bottle as an alternative to a Dewar flask, with a playful commentary on its use.
  • One participant shares an anecdote about their physics teacher's past experience with acquiring LN2 without owning a Dewar flask, adding a personal touch to the discussion.
  • Another participant reiterates the original request, emphasizing the desire for a good quality Dewar flask within the budget and suggesting that a used silvered glass 10L dewar might be attainable.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple competing views on the best options for purchasing a Dewar flask, with no consensus on a single recommended product or approach. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best purchasing strategy.

Contextual Notes

Participants express varying preferences for new versus used flasks, and there are differing opinions on the practicality and quality of suggested products. The discussion includes personal anecdotes that may not directly relate to the technical aspects of Dewar flasks.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in purchasing Dewar flasks for educational purposes, particularly in physics or chemistry contexts, may find this discussion relevant.

I wasn't quite sure which category this fit into, and if it's not this one, I'm sorry.

A couple of friends and I are great friends with our physics teacher. He is a great guy.
He likes to use LN2 a lot, but to rent a dewar flask is fairly expensive he says and they're not always available.

A couple of friends and I are deciding to surprise him at the end of this year with a "you're awesome, thank you" gift at the end of this year. We were planning on getting him a Dewar Flask, about 4 L big. If anyone can help me out in picking out a good quality one for under around 400$ that would be great.

Thanks.

Alas, it's a bit out of your budget:

To me, a Dewar flask is my hip pocket Scotch supply. You can get one for about $5.

If, for some reason, you can't manage to get an affordable Dewar flask, you could always go with a Klein bottle instead.

Actually, I hadn't thought about this before, but that would be a great way to keep my stash away from parasitic visitors who aren't smart enough to get the Scotch out.

OK, I know you wanted to buy one, but here's what our physics teacher said he used to do. He'd go to a welding supply store to buy some LN2 and when asked if he had a Dewar flask he'd simply say no and they would let him sign for one and put down something like a $500 deposit. Sounds like a cool gift.

With $400, you should be able to easily buy a nice, silvered glass 10L dewar if you don't mind buying used.

At the end of my last semester as an undergrad, I bought my aero professor a bottle of booze because I enjoyed his class the most of all the ones I had that semester. That was the only time I bought a teacher anything. It was more like, cheers, I am done with this sh!t! Hes a good professor though, and a good guy. Hes pretty young for a professor, early 30's.
