Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant shares a web resource that suggests Linux distributions based on user preferences, noting that it often lists multiple popular options.
  • Another participant comments on the resource's tendency to suggest many distributions, indicating it provides a general idea for newcomers.
  • Several distributions are highlighted, including Ubuntu, which is noted for its user-friendliness and regular updates, and Kubuntu, which is based on KDE and also emphasizes usability.
  • Debian is mentioned as a robust operating system with a large number of precompiled software packages available for installation.
  • A participant expresses dissatisfaction with the correlation process of the resource, suggesting it was not useful for their needs.
  • Another participant provides a link for screenshots of various distributions, indicating it could be helpful for visualizing the user interface.
  • There is a discussion about the distinction between the appearance of the windowing system and the distribution itself, with one participant asserting that the windowing system is the primary factor in how it looks.
  • A participant mentions that the resource suggested Debian for them, while they currently use openSUSE, expressing confusion about the classification of openSUSE as not free.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying opinions on the usefulness of the resource for determining the right distribution, with some finding it helpful while others do not. There is no consensus on which distribution is definitively better, as personal preferences and experiences vary.

Contextual Notes

Every time I do it, it gives me the names of almost every popular distro, from one CD to five. Nevertheless, it gives an idea to the newbie on what's out there.

We found the following perfect match(es):

Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a free, open source operating system that starts with the breadth of Debian and adds regular releases (every six months), a clear focus on the user and usability (it should "Just Work", TM) and a commitment to security updates with 18 months of support for every release. Ubuntu ships with the latest Gnome release as well as a selection of server and desktop software that makes for a comfortable desktop experience off a single installation CD.

(This distribution also has a "Live CD" you can use to test the distribution before you install it)

Kubuntu
Homepage: http://www.kubuntu.org/

Kubuntu is a user friendly operating system based on KDE, the K Desktop Environment. With a predictable 6 month release cycle and part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntu is the GNU/Linux distribution for everyone.

(This distribution also has a "Live CD" you can use to test the distribution before you install it)

Debian
Homepage: http://www.debian.org/

Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over 15490 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine.
I actually use Umbuntu already, and I have a MAC which has a deb based distribution method (apt-get)
I think the only question it actually used to correlate this was, which distribution method do you perfer, that was a phenomenal waste of time

If you want some screenshots of the distro to go with it you should try out:

http://shots.osdir.com"

It is really good for screen captures.

Screen Captures?

The way the windowing system will look has nothing to do with the distribution, and everything to do with the windowing system.

It also shows the menu, the boot menu, the desktop and other useful properties involving the distrobution.

hmm.. says Debian for me. I am using openSUSE.. close enough. haha

it says opensuse isn't free though, i must be missing something:confused:
