Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a humorous and speculative interpretation of a sighting at a bus stop, with references to the Higgs boson and Nobel Prize considerations. The conversation blends elements of physics with lighthearted commentary, exploring the implications of mass, particle interactions, and the significance of scientific discoveries.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question whether the bus has mass until a person boards it, suggesting a playful interpretation of mass and interaction.
  • Others propose that the interaction between the Higgs boson and the bus is not forbidden by gauge invariance, raising questions about the definition of a "bus" in this context.
  • There are repeated mentions of the Higgs boson and its association with Nobel Prize eligibility, with some participants expressing skepticism about the likelihood of receiving a prize without the particle being observed.
  • One participant notes that existing prizes may cover the same material as the Higgs discovery, implying that it may not be recognized with a Nobel Prize.
  • Several posts humorously reiterate the sighting at the bus stop, contributing to the lighthearted tone of the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of humorous speculation and serious commentary, with no clear consensus on the implications of the Higgs boson or the likelihood of receiving a Nobel Prize. The discussion remains unresolved with competing views on the significance of the sighting and its scientific implications.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the playful nature of the discussion, which may obscure serious scientific considerations. The references to Nobel Prizes depend on subjective interpretations of what constitutes a significant discovery.

He was standing at a bus stop...

Does that mean the bus has no mass until he gets on?

I think it rather means an interaction term between the Higgs and the bus is not forbidden by gauge invariance. If the Higgs would give rise to the bus' mass, it would be questionable whether we still call it a "bus" before Higgs is on board.

let us know when you see his boson

And you didn't even tell him about PF?

Did he looked depressed because his Nobel Prize gets postponed so often?

i don't think he's got much of a chance unless is particle is finally observed. nobel prizes are for discoveries that have practical value, which is probably why hawking hasn't won one either.

Did he have a shopping cart?

And what was the Higgs' bus on?

He won't get it. The Abrikosov, Leggett and Ginzberg prize covers the same material, albeit in a different application. The Yoichiro Nambu prize covers what's left.

Yes, that's what I mean. That discovery is postponed over and over again:
